Scenic winding road overlooking the Atlantic coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way

Stretching 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) along Ireland’s rugged western seaboard from the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal to the culinary port of Kinsale in County Cork, the Wild Atlantic Way is one of the world’s most dramatic coastal touring routes.

The Six Key Coastal Zones

1. Northern Headlands (Donegal)

Raw, untamed landscapes featuring Slieve League—among the highest sea cliffs in Europe at nearly 600 meters (almost three times higher than the Cliffs of Moher).

2. Surf Coast (Sligo & Mayo)

A playground for big-wave surfers at Mullaghmore Head and hikers climbing Benbulben mountain or cycling the 42-kilometer Great Western Greenway on Achill Island.

3. Bay Coast (Galway & Mayo)

Characterized by deep glacial fjords like Killary Harbour, golden sands at Dog’s Bay, and the wild peat bogs of Connemara.

4. Cliff Coast (Clare & Galway)

Home to the world-famous Cliffs of Moher and the unique limestone pavements of the Burren, where rare alpine and Mediterranean wildflowers grow side by side.

5. Southern Peninsulas (Kerry & West Cork)

The iconic scenic loops: the Dingle Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry, and the Beara Peninsula, featuring the dramatic mountain switchbacks of the Healy Pass.

6. Haven Coast (West Cork)

Charming sailing harbors, artisan food producers, and historic sea fortresses around Bantry Bay and Kinsale.

Practical Road Trip Logistics

  • Duration: Allow at least 7 to 10 days to explore two or three adjacent sections rather than attempting the entire 2,500 km route in a single trip.
  • Look for Discovery Points: The route is marked by distinctive blue wave-and-compass signs and 188 designated “Discovery Points” with parking and informative signage.
